Jean Poulain, born in 1884 in Katanga (former Belgian Congo ) and died in 1967 in Belgium, was a Belgian artist, animal painter.
In 1904, he left his family to explore the territory of the Belgian Congo . In 1912 he participated to the discovery of the African continent, alternating country visits to Africa and returns to his family in Katanga. During his travels, he met his future wife, the daughter of a copper mines operator whom he married in 1917. In 1920, he developed his art to painting and especially for the animal drawing. He travels with his wife several African countries, meeting of tribes and clans secrets, not disclosing their location to preserve civilization. In the 1930s, after these expeditions, he made the most accomplished drawings from his sketches, sketchbooks and photographs. In 1967 he died without heir .
