Signed and dated hand carved stone pilot head
Signed and dated 1919 had carved very nice quality stone pilot head.
Excellent condition.
28cm 16cm 14cm
Signature is very hard to read.
Directly carved stone sculpture representing the head of an airplane pilot wearing his helmet.
It is important to note that this is not a casting, but a work sculpted by the artist's hand (direct carving). The sculpture is dated 1919 and is of high quality. It is signed, but the signature has not been deciphered.
It should be recalled that at the end of the First World War, numerous sculptors were commissioned by municipalities and administrations to erect monuments commemorating the Great War. The dimensions of the sculpture presented here exclude such a use; it is more likely a project (a study or maquette) or a work intended to be offered to a notable figure.
Among the most famous sculptors of this period who worked in this early Art Deco style are the brothers Jan and Joël Martel. This is a rare work.
