Circa 1935 nickel plated planter.
This nickel-plated planter, stamped inside with the circular Compagnie Générale Transatlantique (CGT) monogram, is a direct witness to the prestigious interior appointments of the ocean liner Normandie, circa 1935.
The object is identifiable in period photographs documenting the ship’s “Grand Luxe” cabins, where a piece of identical form and function is shown in situ on the onboard furniture. With its modern material and streamlined silhouette, this accessory embodies the “Ocean Liner” style (Streamline Moderne) characteristic of the great transatlantic crossings of the 1930s.
Original items from the Normandie are exceptionally rare on the market, as the vast majority of its furnishings and decor were lost when the ship caught fire and capsized in New York Harbor in 1942.
The piece is in excellent overall condition, showing only a few minor dings here and there.
