Cubist Harlequin.
Wood. Monogrammed “AFF”.
Probabaly french. Circa 1930.
Excellent condition.
48cm high.
This hand-carved solid wood sculpture is of significant interest. The execution of the figure in a bold Cubist style, reminiscent of the Martel brothers, demonstrates the sculptor’s great maturity. Although we have not yet identified the artist behind the monogram, we are aware of other wooden sculptures bearing the same signature. Everything suggests the sculptor is French, as their works have consistently been located within France. Curiously, the quality of the base and its mounting to the sculpture itself are evocative of the SAS editor, which produced works by major artists such as Sandoz or Adnet during the 1930s.
