MULLER FRERES LUNEVILLE
Rare and Unique Art Deco Monumental Sculptural Glass & Metal Lamp
By Muller Frères Lunéville, France, circa 1930
This is an exceptional and unique architectural lamp, likely a special commission, showcasing the absolute mastercraft of Muller Frères Lunéville during the height of the Art Deco period.
The most remarkable feature of this work is its truly monumental and exceptional scale. Measuring 90.5 cm (35.6 inches) in width, this piece transforms from a simple lamp into an impressive architectural light sculpture. Such size is practically unheard of for sculptural glass works of this era.
The central glass panel, itself of an exceptional thickness of 4 cm (1.6 inches), is meticulously carved with a deep-relief (bas-relief) decoration depicting a classical or Bacchic procession of figures amidst vine tendrils and grape clusters. This intricate and complex motif is deeply carved into one face of the glass to a depth exceeding 1 cm, creating an incredible sense of volume, depth, and three-dimensionality.
When illuminated, the light sources within the metal base brilliantly highlight the frosted, high-carved figures against the translucent glass background. This creates a truly impressive and dramatic light effect, where the deeply carved relief appears to come to life, appearing almost fully sculpted in the round.
The glass panel itself is in excellent condition with no significant damage to the intricate carving or edges. It is clearly and visibly signed “MULLER LUNEVILLE” and “FRANCE”. The monumental glass panel is set within its original, structurally sound Art Deco base in chrome- or nickel-plated metal, which shows minor signs of aging (pitting) consistent with its nearly 100-year history and as pictured.
This is not just a lamp; it is a major work of Art Deco lighting and a testament to the supreme craftsmanship of Muller Frères Lunéville. The combination of its massive size, exceptional glass thickness, and profound carving makes this a highly significant, museum-quality piece for any discerning Art Deco collection.
