Pierre Seguin was important sculptor, who worked for Paris Sacre Coeur and also Notre Dame church.
His works are extremly rare on the market.
Biography
Pierre Seguin is the son of Jean Seguin, ship carpenter, and Marguerite Thibaud. He studied at the Bordeaux School of Fine Arts where he won first prize for decorative sculpture in 1887 and 1888.
A graduate of the National School of Decorative Arts in Paris where he was a student of Lucien Woog, he won the first prize for sculpture in 1892 and the first prize for ornamental sculpture in 1893. He then obtained a gold medal at the Universal Exhibition of 1900 .
He married Claire Eugénie Miquet on April 30 , 1910 in the 14th arrondissement of Paris. He set up his workshop in his house at 4 rue Gager-Gabillot in the 15th arrondissement 1 ,. During the First World War he was mobilized from August 4, 1914 to December 26, 1918. He was appointed professor of sculpture and modeling at the National School of Decorative Arts in Paris in April 1919 and he taught there until his retirement. in 1934.
A renowned ornamental sculptor, he worked on a large number of prestigious buildings such as the Vichy opera house , the Tunis theater , the Arras town hall and the Sacré-Cœur basilica in Montmartre. . The architect Émile Brunet entrusted him with numerous sculpture works in religious buildings such as the Saint-Denys-Sainte-Foy church in Coulommiers , the Saint-Léon church in Paris ,and even the Notre-Dame cathedral in Paris. Notable figure of Art Nouveau , he is the author of the sculptures which adorn the facades of numerous cut stone buildings in the 16th arrondissement of Paris.
Two exhibitions on the life and work of Pierre Seguin are organized by the Association for the Protection of Gauriacais Heritage, one in November 2022 in his native village of Gauriac and the other in March 2023 in Reignac.
