In 1871, the Daum family settled in Nancy, fleeing Alsace from Germans. The father was Jean (1825-1885), a public notary. In Nancy, Jean Daum met a group of industrialists and he started a glassworks with them in 1875. Its name was "Verrerie Sainte-Catherine". It produced traditional tableware. Very quickly, problems came. In 1878, Jean Daum took over the totality of the shares of the company calling it "Verrerie de Nancy". In 1879, the oldest son of Jean, Auguste (1853-1909), rounded up his study of law and came to assist his father in the glassworks. Jean died in 1885. Antonin (1864-1931), a Auguste's brother, joined the glassworks in 1887. Auguste Daum became commercial and financial director and Antonin Daum led the production process. The financial recovery of the company and its artistic development were starting. Up to 1894 they had the only glassworks in Nancy. After 1900, the Daum glassworks could increase production with more than 300 employees. The "Verrerie de Nancy" became the epitomize in the art glass industry with its revolutionary techniques. It Included working with colour powders, with acids, with enamel and with fluorine hydrogen. The Daum aboratory was very inventively in this period. The Daum brothers did not hesitate to ask other designers and companies to participate to the design and making of their products such as Louis Majorelle, Edgar Brandt, Chapelle, ...
